a Moment for Wisdom…

“Although the connections are not always obvious, personal change is inseparable from social and political change.”

Harriet Lerner

“If we can recognize that change and uncertainty are basic principles, we can greet the future and the transformation we are undergoing with the understanding that we do not know enough to be pessimistic.”

Hazel Henderson

Personal Wisdom:

Do you think Lerner is right?  In your own life, do you experience personal change and societal/ political change as inseparable?  If so, how?  If not, why not?

Societal Wisdom:

All of our science points us to gloomy conclusions.  How is it that “we do not know enough to be pessimistic”?  It seems that we know plenty!  Too much!

What do we have to “un-know” as a society?

a Moment with Sharif…

My comment quotes yet another wise woman/friend — Barbara Marx Hubbard.  She tells a story about a “Fetal Scientist”.  A scientist who is a fetus inside a womb.  He’s doing what scientists do – take measurements of his environment, the inside of the placenta.  He’s increasingly alarmed: he’s growing fast, yet his nutrient supply remains the same.  He foresees a time, around the tenth or eleventh month, when he outstrips his nutrient supply and starves to death.

He panics, because he cannot account for the one thing that he has never experienced: birth.  The caterpillar cannot account for its transformation into a butterfly. Similarly, we cannot account for the upcoming transformation, one that none of us can experience (or even necessarily predict), yet is wired into our very being.

As my friend Hazel says, we don’t know enough to be pessimistic about our futures.

This is a time when our “knowing” has to take a second seat to our “faith”.  (I don’t say this lightly; those who know me know how much I have focused on my intellectual training and development.)  Faith in yourself.  Faith in “Others” as mirrors of your Self.  Faith in CHANGE, that everything is evolving to other forms.  Faith in LIFE, in the beautiful processes so much a part of our being yet outside of our comprehension.  Faith in the Divine/Transcendent processes that are invisible to our senses yet are fundamental to our existence.

It is this faith that will allow a Transcendent vision to manifest and give strength to our courage and our muscles during our times of unknowing.

To envision and implement a transformation of human societies, one radical enough to match the times, inclusive enough to heal humanity and all other beings, and visionary enough to propel us to the next step of human evolution.
