a Moment for Wisdom…

The Divine has no body on earth but
yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours. Yours are the eyes through which the Divine compassion is to look out to the world.  Yours are the feet with which he is to go about doing good. Yours are the hands with
which he is to bless men now.”

St. Teresa of Avila

(1515 – 1582)

Personal Wisdom:

[First: don’t let yourself get hung up on the  gender-based and anthropomorphized language.
This was the common way people spoke and wrote in that time. Look for the wisdom beyond and within the language.]

If the “hands” (active principle) of the Divine are your hands, how have your actions been that of the Divine this day? This week? This

How do you spread “blessings”? Do you go around saying “bless you” to everyone? How do your actions imply/demonstrate your blessing?

Societal Wisdom:

America prides itself on being a “religious” country. However, our collective actions
are not in alignment with our professed principles.

Can you identify times when our collective “hands” and “feet” demonstrate our Divine beliefs?

What would it take for those situations to spread? To become the norm?

Can you name societies where the collective actions of the people are in alignment with their professed principles?

Why do you believe that society reached alignment between their actions and their

Divine eyes. We can look at a person and say that they have attractive eyes. But that’s not what St. Teresa means here.

We are aware, from basic science class, of the mechanics of our eyes. Photos striking retina, electrical impulses traveling the optic nerve, processing in brain centers… A very “Breaker” way to think about the whole process.

There is another process, one much more profound and powerful. Our eyes are two-way streets: they receive photons/information, but they also PROJECT into the world.

“Huh? Eyes ‘project’? I didn’t see that in my science book! What do the eyes project?”

Well, they project YOU, your essence, out into the world. And, they project GOD/ LIFE/ THE
DIVINE/ THE TRANSCENDENT out into the world. And… those are not two different

You’ve met people who make you light up whenever they look at you. You can “feel” when someone is looking at you, even across a crowded room.  They are projecting onto you.  And, you’ve met people who make you feel weird, whom you try to avoid eye contact. And, you’ve met people whose eyes are “dead” – who convey no light or life. (If you can’t think of anyone in
the latter category, try to make eye contact with the next person you see begging for change on the street corners.  We live in a soul-deadening society…)

The world gets filled with Divine compassion when it comes radiating out from your eyes.
This is the Light that can cause the dead to come back to life… All it takes is a little practice.

To envision and implement a transformation of human societies, one radical enough to match the times, inclusive enough to heal humanity and all other
beings, and visionary enough to propel us to the next step of human evolution.
