a Moment for Wisdom…

.

.
.

DAILY WISDOM:

Peace is not the product of terror or fear…

Peace is not the silent result of violent repression.

Peace is the generous, tranquil contribution of all to the good of all.

Peace is dynamism.

Peace is generosity.

It is right and it is duty.”

Archbishop Oscar Romero

Personal Wisdom:

How is peace “dynamic” in your life? How do you practice dynamic peace in your everyday life?

How does the word “duty” resonate for you? Name some “duties” that exist in your life now. How does “peace” fit as a “duty”?

How does the word “right” resonate for you? Name some “rights” that exist in your life now. How does “peace” fit as a “right”?

Societal Wisdom:

What would happen to our society if we treated peace as a fundamental human right?

What would happen to our society if we treated peace as a fundamental duty, a responsibility of citizenship?

What would it take to make peace both a right and a duty?

a Moment with Sharif…

Under the Second Amendment to the US Constitution, owning a gun is a “right”. There are some who read it that gun ownership is a “duty”.

What are the duties of citizenship? Actually, not much. While registering to vote is a civic responsibility, it is not a “duty”: nothing happens if you don’t register. Similarly, paying taxes is not a “duty” of citizenship, since non-citizens have an equal responsibility to pay taxes if they earn money in the US. So, what are our duties?

America would become a very interesting place if we considered “peace” to be a right and a duty!

You cannot have PEACE without Justice to paraphrase Archbishop Oscar Romero.
